Program Description:
C3, Controlled Camera Chaos — A New Way to Create Abstract Art with ICM with David Day
This presentation is based on my research into the development of abstract images using ICM techniques adapted to the studio setting. As a result of this presentation, the audience will gain knowledge of the following:
- four basic types of intentional camera movement photography.
- additional opportunities for creation of images by adapting ICM to the studio setting.
- how to create a composited abstract ICM image using Adobe Photoshop.
- how to construct scenes to create ICM abstracts in the studio.
- management of scene illumination.
- the concept of pareidolia and its role in ICM abstraction.
- considerations for equipment used in creating studio ICM abstracts.
- the basic types of camera movements used in creating studio-based ICM abstracts.
- construction of a dedicated ICM studio.
Within context of the above learning objectives, many examples of my work will be provided to reinforce the learning objectives, so at the end of the presentation, viewers will have an understanding of the skillsets to be mastered in the creation of studio-based abstract ICM photography.
Photograper Bio:
Trained as a pharmaceutical scientist, I specialized in uncovering hidden connections between medication use and avoidable health events. That analytical mindset became the foundation for my current photographic practice.
My journey began in the 1990s, capturing local scenery and historic landmarks around Fairfield, Connecticut. Early explorations in infrared photography and darkroom manipulation reflected my fascination with ethereal, dreamlike imagery. In 2020, I pivoted to intentional camera movement (ICM) to introduce motion, ambiguity, and emotional depth to my images. A serendipitous image of three plastic-coated copper wires—created through an accidental gesture—became a turning point. Unable to replicate it using conventional ICM, I began a deeper inquiry that resulted in the development of ICM in the studio that I now term C3 – controlled Camera Chaos.
My work explores the emotional residue of dreams—the way they linger, distort, and rearrange meaning. I recreate the visual cadence of dream states, where abrupt transitions and illogical juxtapositions evoke both wonder and unease. By inviting viewers into these fractured narratives, I aim to provoke connections that feel deeply intuitive yet intellectually dissonant— echoes of the lucid dream, where clarity and chaos coexist.
