Program Description:

Expressive Processing

Most photography instruction focuses on the how: the settings, the techniques, and the tools of making a beautiful photo. This presentation is about the why. Expressive processing is the art of making intentional decisions in post-processing that go beyond showing a pretty picture of a pretty place. Every image contains a feeling worth communicating. Every photographer has something worth saying. Learning to recognize that feeling and then using the tools available to amplify it is what turns a photograph into art.

What you'll learn:
  • How different tonal choices: high key vs. low key, shadow-anchored vs. highlight-anchored, communicate different emotional states
  • How shapes and lines within a frame speak to the viewer subconsciously, and how to emphasize or suppress them in processing
  • How color direction, white balance, and saturation influence mood and feeling
  • How texture, clarity, and haze create emotional distance or intimacy
  • How to develop a personal visual language that reflects your inner state and experiences.
  • How to look at your own images and ask "what is this trying to say?" before deciding how to process it.

Photograper Bio:

TJ Thorne is a US-based photographer who focuses on the calming simplicity of the world around him. Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, he has made his home in Oregon for the last two decades, honing his photography vision and career in the diverse landscapes of the Western United States.

As a self-taught artist, TJ highly values using experimentation and rule-breaking to engage with a variety of subjects and types of light, with a heavy focus on water abstracts. His first monograph of the subject, Ebb and Flow, was published in April 2023.

In his workshops, presentations, and educational materials, TJ teaches using photography as a vehicle for personal growth and getting in touch with the inner artist.
