In this talk, Andrew Hertel explores how to move beyond technically perfect or postcard-pretty landscapes and create images that carry emotional weight. Through stories from the field and visual examples, he’ll share how presence, light, composition, and intentional editing can help evoke feeling and connection, both in the photographer and the viewer.

Andrew Hertel is a black and white fine art photographer based in San Diego. His work is shaped by a deep love for nature and a desire to create images that feel quiet, honest, and immersive. Whether exploring the deserts of the Southwest, the mountains of the Sierra, or remote corners of the world, Andrew looks for moments that invite stillness and connection. His goal is to make photographs that evoke emotion and make the viewer feel like they were standing there with him. Alongside his fine art work, he leads immersive photography workshops and shares stories from the field through his blog, newsletter, and YouTube channel.
